The President condemns LTTE bomb attack

Statement by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the bomb explosion carried out by the LTTE at Katubedda in Moratuwa, today (June 06, 08).

Today's explosion at Katubedda once again shows the LTTE's brutality and lack of respect for human life.

I extend my sympathies to the families of those killed, and offer the blessings of the Noble Triple Gem and all deities for the speedy recovery of all injured.

While unreservedly condemning this repeated act of outrageous brutality by the LTTE, in its cowardly strategy of targeting innocent civilians, I note that this is further proof of the LTTE's frenzy at its major military setbacks in the North, and the loss its hold in the Eastern Province.

In the past weeks alert members of the public have shown commendable courage and responsibility in spotting bombs in vehicles and public places, helping to seize hidden explosives, and arrest persons believed to be associated with the LTTE's programme of terror.

The continued targeting of innocent civilians by the LTTE must earn the outrage and opprobrium of all civilized societies, who can now see the reality of the LTTE's unvarying commitment to violence and terror to achieve its narrow objectives.

This once again brings into focus the continuing battle Sri Lanka faces with the forces of terror in our efforts to safeguard democracy and civilized life.

This brutality also shows the efforts of the LTTE to provoke a backlash against the Tamil people, from which it hopes to gain, although the Tamil people themselves are held in thrall by the terror of its so-called liberator.

I call on the people to remain calm and not give in to deliberate provocations aimed at fanning communal hatred and violence, remain vigilant against the forces of terror, and continue to assist the Police and Security Forces in the task of eradicating terrorism from our country.

Nation Salutes Our Liberators on War Heroes Day

Nation Salutes Our Liberators on War Heroes Day

PAST MEMORIES of the ancient grandeur were recalled with respect, as beats of Ranabera (drums) rent the air when the Nation stood in silence at the dawn of Saturday (7th June), the much-revered "War Heroes Day". The national event was exclusively meant to pay tribute to brave soldiers of the tri-services (Army, Navy & Air Force) and the Police who continue to defend their motherland at the expense of their own lives.

The D-Day is also dedicated to the memory of thousands of War Heroes who have laid their lives while in action or gone missing. This year's main ceremony was to get underway at the Sri Jayawardenapura Parliament Ground this evening (7) where a special permanent War Hero monument, erected on behalf of them, was to be unveiled by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. for more details http//:www.defence.lk

Respect civilian life – AI tells LTTE

Respect civilian life – AI tells LTTE

The London based human rights group Amnesty International (AI) is calling on the LTTE and other armed groups to comply with the rules of international law and to respect civilian life.

An Amnesty International statement said:

"At least 23 people have been killed and many others injured in two bomb attacks in Sri Lanka.

According to press reports, one bomb exploded on a busy commuter bus at Katubedda, near Colombo, on 6 June, killing 21 civilians, injuring at least 60 others. The second attack targeted a bus in the central Kandy district. Eyewitnesses at the scenes of carnage spoke of the growing fear of travelling just two days after another bomb in Colombo. The recent spate of attacks marks a pattern of deliberate and indiscriminate attacks in the south, as conflict intensifies in the north.

The authorities blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the attacks. While no group has publicly admitted responsibility for the attacks, they bear the hallmarks of LTTE attacks.

Amnesty International has repeatedly condemned abuses by the LTTE, including killings of civilians, hostage-taking, torture and other abuses, and has called for an end to such abuses and for those responsible to be brought to justice in conformity with international law.

As the conflict intensifies in the north, Amnesty International is calling on the Sri Lankan government to ensure that its security forces comply with Sri Lanka’s obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law, and in particular to ensure that the civilian population are protected at all times.

Amnesty International is also calling on the LTTE and other armed groups to comply with the rules of international law and to respect civilian life.

Amnesty International calls for an immediate end to attacks on civilians".

Bridge Over River Kwai engineer dies

Bridge Over River Kwai engineer dies

Keith Best who built the bridge over the River Kwai for the movie classic shot in Sri Lanka has died aged 85. It took Best eight months, with the use of 500 workers and 35 elephants to build the bridge in Sri Lanka.

War veteran and civil engineer Keith Best OBE, of Chessingham Gardens, off Tadcaster Road in York, designed and built the centrepiece of the 1957 film, which scooped seven Oscars, including Best Picture.

While the bridge was constructed by prisoners of war in two months, the actual one built in Sri Lanka by Mr Best for the filming took eight months, with the use of 500 workers and 35 elephants.

It was demolished in a matter of seconds, and the total cost was £85,000 pounds, equivalent to more than £1.2 million in today's money.

Mr Best died on Sunday after losing his battle against cancer.

Born in 1923 in Sheffield, Mr Best was in the parachute regiment during the Second World War and was dropped behind enemy lines in France before D Day.

He was captured by the Germans and put in a prisoner of war camp for a year until it was liberated.

After the war he finished university and trained as a civil engineer before starting work with a company called Husband's in Sheffield and went to work for them building bridges in Sri Lanka.

It was while out in Sri Lanka that he was asked to work on the iconic bridge, which was 425ft long and 50ft above the water.

The film, which was directed by David Lean and stars Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins, uses the construction of the Burma-Siam Railway in 1942-43 for its historical setting.

The movie deals with the situation facing British prisoners of war who are ordered by their Japanese captors to build a bridge to accommodate the railway.

The blockbuster shows the British soldiers' instinct is to sabotage the bridge but they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed as a symbol of British morale, spirit and dignity in adverse circumstances.

Mr Best's son, Clive, remembers how his dad argued with Hollywood producer Sam Spiegel to let him build the bridge in the first place. He said: "Sam Spiegel wanted to build a model to save money, but they managed to convince him to build a life-size bridge.

"They based it on the Fourth Bridge, but had to build it out of wood from the surrounding jungle and then when it was built my dad had to push the button to blow it up.

"They got just one shot at it and the first time the train went across they didn't blow it up because of a mix-up with the cameras.

"The train was derailed at the other end and they had to take months out to get it back on track."

Mr Best went on to work for a firm of civil engineers in Durham and in 1983 he was awarded the OBE for building bridges.

He retired to York in 1991 and wrote his memoirs, Best Endeavours in 1992. In his spare time he loved sailing and sailed Dragon Keelboats.

Mr Best married his wife, Maire, in 1947, who died in 2000. The couple are survived by their three children, Sally, Jonathan and Clive and three grandchildren - David, Louise and Naomi.

International Federation of Journalists says about the abduction and violent attack on Keith Noyahr

Defence Reporter Abducted and Severely Beaten In Sri Lanka

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is outraged at the abduction and violent attack on Keith Noyahr, deputy editor and defense writer for the English weekly The Nation on May 22.

According to the Free Media Movement (FMM), an IFJ affiliate, Noyahr, 44, was abducted on his way home from work after leaving his office at around 10.30pm on Thursday evening. His vehicle was found in front of his house, its headlights on and its engine still running. Local reports suggest he was abducted while he was opening the gate to his garage.

The editor of The Nation immediately reported Noyahr's disappearance to the Dehiwala police.
The FMM has reported that while Noyahr was returned home early this morning, he is badly hurt and is currently in intensive care.

The IFJ believes Keith Noyahr was abducted and physically assaulted as a direct result of his work as a journalist.

As a defense writer for The Nation, Noyahr has reported on the on-going conflict between the Sri Lankan Army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). According to a family member, he had received a number of threats in recent weeks.

The abduction and assault of Keith Noyahr is yet another alarming act of violence during a period of increasing hostility towards members of the media in Sri Lanka.

J.S. Tissainayagam, columnist of the Sunday Times and Editor of the website www.outreach.com and V. Jesiharan, owner of the E-Kwality printing press and Manager of www.outreach.com and his wife Walarmathi, remain in detention after being arrested in early March by the Terrorist Investigation Division of the Sri Lankan Police. No one has been charged in any court of law.

In 2007, Iqbal Athas, a defense correspondent and associate editor for The Sunday Times in Colombo, was attacked by the Sri Lankan government due to his criticism of government corruption and military expenditure.

The IFJ strongly condemns these attacks on members of the media community. The protection of journalists and media workers is vital not simply for freedom of the press, but also for a functioning democracy. Defense correspondents such as Keith Noyahr and Iqbal Athas in particular have a significant role in reporting on corruption within all levels of society and government.

The IFJ joins the FMM in demanding an immediate inquiry into the abduction and assault of Keith Noyahr. The perpetrators of this crime must be brought to justice and a message sent to those who attack media workers.

The IFJ congratulates the FMM and all individuals and organizations who banded together to put pressure on the government to ensure Keith Noyahr’s return.

Human Rights Hot line

The Public could access the hot line on 011-2676513 and 060-2119246

A 24 hour rapid response hotline to clarify queries regarding arrests, detention, suspected abduction and disappearances will be launched today by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights.

Ministry sources said persons who seek information would be able to clarify matters in all three languages - Sinhala, Tamil and English.

The objective of creating this hotline is to enable the public to obtain information whether a person is or is not in official custody.

Operators can also direct callers to access law-enforcement Authorities to initiate investigations into such cases, sources said.

The hot line is to be in operation for eight months initially until December, with the initiative to be assessed after that on the basis of the need. The Ministry said this step was taken to ensure that laws on arrest and detention are fully implemented - particularly where emergency regulations are invoked- especially the implementation of the Presidential direction on arrest and detention.

It also said that the Ministry had received information that in the context of ongoing security operations aimed at preventing and investigating acts of terrorism people have been taken into custody with subsequent investigations as to their bona fides.

Others have been allegedly abducted for collateral purposes such as demanding of a ransom and family members were anxious to clarify their whereabouts and safety, it said. According to Ministry sources, the Minister for Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe had consulted senior officers of the AG department, the Police, Armed services, HR commission and Ministry officials before finalising matters pertaining to the proposed hot line.

The proposed hotline accessible to people through out the country is to be housed in the Disaster Management Centre under the purview of the Ministry.

World Press Freedom Day 2008

World Press Freedom Day 2008
Freedom of Expression, Access to Information and Empowerment of People

Freedom of Expression is a fundamental human right as stated in Article 19 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. This is especially worth recalling as we mark the 60th anniversary of that declaration.

At this year’s World Press Freedom Day celebration, UNESCO would like to explore how media freedom and access to information feed into the wider development objective of empowering people.

Empowerment is a multi-dimensional social and political process that helps people gain control over their own lives. This can only be achieved through access to accurate, fair and unbiased information, representing a plurality of opinions, and the means to actively communicate vertically and horizontally, thereby participating in the active life of the community.

Madhu church open to public soon

Madhu church open to public soon

Security forces hand over shrine to Mannar Bishop:

Making another military pledge a reality, the centuries-old sacred Madhu Church, where all communities worshipped will be opened to the public soon for the annual feast. The shrine was liberated by the Security Forces from LTTE terrorists.

The sacred Madhu Shrine which was liberated from LTTE terrorists was handed over to Rev. Fr. Victor Susai, Vicar General of Mannar, who accepted it on behalf of the Bishop of Mannar yesterday.

Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka called upon those who removed the statue of Our Lady of Madhu to bring it back to the church.

"Those who were in charge of the statue have the responsibility of bringing it back", he said adding that the Madhu area would be declared as a security zone and pilgrims would be provided all facilities to worship at the shrine.

The Madhu shrine, where thousands of pilgrims gather during the August church feast was under the clutches of the LTTE from 1999. The shrine area later became a military base for the LTTE positioning its heavy guns around the church premises.

The LTTE used the shrine as a shield to avoid military offensives within the 'No War Zone' and the Army was compelled to refrain from attacking the terrorists because of the sacred shrine complex.

Lt. Gen. Fonseka said that the 57 division supported by the Light Infantry unit tactically forced the terrorists who occupied the shrine to withdraw but the fleeing terrorists damaged the roof of the main church and the adjoining hall.

According to Lt. Gen. Fonseka, the area has been heavily mined with anti personnel mines and booby traps and bunkers have been erected around the shrine. "The military will soon complete clearing the mines", he said.

LTTE aircraft drop bombs in Welioya

LTTE aircrafts dropped three bombs at the Welioya Forward Defence Line in the North early this morning but the military says it did not cause any major damages.
espite heightened ground confrontations between troops and LTTE at the Wanni battle theatre, it was reported that 3 bombs were dropped by LTTE today (April 27) at the military forward defence lines in Welioya at around 1.45 a.m.

According to military Spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, no damages were caused to own troops in the aerial bombing.

"During the wee hours the SLAF air defence network radars detected 2 light aircraft of LTTE which were airborne and heading towards Welioya. In accordance with standard operating procedures, SLAF interceptor aircraft were made airborne in the direction of the intruding enemy craft. However, enroute to the area it was observed that the LTTE air craft were fleeing and heading back", air force sources were quoted as saying in a press release issued.

Earlier, on Saturday LTTE suffered heavy beating by SLA infantrymen when troops successfully thwarted two pronged LTTE offensive attempts to breach the military defences at Welioya. Meanwhile, troops also dismantled an LTTE artillery attack launched towards Galkulama and Sinhapura villages at Weiloya on Saturday morning. No damages were caused to both civilian and security personnel, sources further said.

According to military sources, these failed attempts by LTTE are sheer signs of desperation by the outfit to unwind its present sorry situation. The LTTE is suffering with increasing defeats at the hands of military, and troops deployed at Weiloya are constantly pushing LTTE to relocate its defences closer to it last bastions in Kilinochchi and Mullaittiuvu districts, defence sources said.

Army liberates sacred Madhu shrine from terror clutches

Army liberates sacred Madhu shrine from terror clutches

Sri Lanka army has liberated the sacred Madhu shrine by beating off the occupying LTTE terrorists today morning (April 25). The soldiers of 8 Sri Lanka Light Infantry reached the shrine as the terrorists beat a retreat unable to withstand the army advance.

The centuries old Catholic shrine is held sacred and respected by all Sri Lankans irrespective of religion and ethnicity. Thousands of pilgrims used to visit the shrine, especially during the church feast in August, before the terrorists took control of the area in 1999.

As LTTE terrorists unleashed their "Final War" in 2006, the church became a sanctuary for thousands of civilians who wanted to avoid their children being conscripted by the terror outfit. Later, LTTE agents acting under religious facades, evicted these civilians and unashamedly made many of them to fall prey to the terrorists.

Gradually, the terrorists almost turned the shrine into a terror base by positioning its heavy guns around the church and using it as a barrack for its cadres. Though this desecration has [Click to magnify/shrink] been carried out for last few months the fact was kept secret from the general public until the sacred statue of Our Lady of Madhu was shifted two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Army 57 division battling against the terrorists on the Vavuniya battle front, tactically removed most of the terrorists' lines of communication to what had then become the terror stronghold inside the Madhu complex, making the occupying terrorists isolated from the rest. Army specifically resorted to this slow and painstaking tactical measure in order to avoid any military operations within the Madhu "No War Zone". Many soldiers had to sacrifice their lives and limbs in this endeavour as they refrained from any retaliation to shells launched from the vicinity of the church complex.

The mode of operandi became a success as the terrorists started to withdraw amid the increasing military pressures outside the no war zone. The LTTE bands, "Malathi", "Radha" and "Charles Anthony" withdrew from the area after shifting their heavy guns. A small LTTE element lead by a terrorist leader "Gopith" was the last known terror group to remain at the church.

At present, army troops are clearing the surroundings of the church, as there is a strong possibility that the terrorists have booby-trapped the church building before they left.
