Sri Lanka Artistes carry peace message through Adishtana Pooja

Sri Lanka Artistes carry peace message through Adishtana Pooja

The Adishtana Pooja by Sri Lankan artistes aimed at carrying the message of peace and harmony, goodwill and brotherhood and principally organised to clear the air regarding the ongoing humanitarian operations in the North to their protesting South Indian counterparts was held yesterday at Torrington Square with the participation of a large gathering of film and tele-stars and personalities in the art field.

The main objective was to create a true picture of the ongoing humanitarian operations in the North to rescue the innocent civilians trapped in the grip of LTTE terror, veteran actor Ravindra Randeniya, an organiser of the event stated.

A letter was also submitted to South Indian Cinema Artistes and Technicians through the High Commissioner of India following the Adishtana Pooja.

Highlighting the main objective of the event, Randeniya said artistes who have gathered there yearn for a peaceful country. This is the hope and aspiration of the people of this country.

He said whatever community be they Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher, had been under threat by the LTTE terrorists' acts for more than three decades without exception. Today the artistes have raised their voice on their behalf.

There is no country which had been under the threat of terrorists' cruel acts with assassinations of political leaders and veterans from all the fields, he recalled the bitter past where innocents suffered.

A message signed by artistes stressed that there is no genocide practised against innocent un-armed Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka wholly with BIMSTEC against terrorism and organized crime - President said

"Sri Lanka wholeheartedly supports the BIMSTEC Convention on Cooperation in Combating International Terrorism, Organized Crime and Illicit Drug Trafficking as an important and vital milestone in our efforts on counter terrorism," said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the 2nd Summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), at New Delhi today(Nov 13).

"Terrorist groups are able to sustain themselves by illegal fundraising, narcotics and people trafficking, money laundering using international networks, and arms and ammunition smuggling including through the sea routes in the Bay of Bengal. I urge you to consider setting up a mechanism to effectively police the seas of the Bay of Bengal, to deny these terrorists mobility and connectivity.

"For over two decades, Sri Lanka has been facing a tremendous challenge to our democratic way of life through the barbaric actions of a terrorist group, the LTTE. There is no doubt that such groups have to be dealt with militarily. At the same time Sri Lanka believes that any underlying causes, exploited by the terrorists in an attempt to seek legitimacy for their operations, should be dealt with politically. I wish to assure this august gathering that we are firmly on the path to a political solution," President Rajapaksa said.

He added that: "While the BIMSTEC nations have constructively and prudently engaged in the process of globalization, nevertheless the economic challenges faced by many of our major trading partners, will inevitably have some impact on our own pace of growth....The situation has therefore made all of us very much aware of the protection that regional self-reliance can afford, against global economic uncertainties."

Obama and Bush in White House meeting

Bush and Obama, who routed the incumbent's fellow Republican and chosen successor John McCain in the November 4 election, met privately for about an hour in the chamber from which the US president makes world-shaping decisions.

Obama and wife Michelle Obama had arrived about 10 minutes early for their two-hour visit and got a warm welcome from Bush and First Lady Laura Bush at the mansion's South Portico, a gateway to the mansion for many world leaders.

As their wives took a tour of the 132-room White House's residential areas, the 43rd president and his successor strolled along the Rose Garden and into the Oval Office, Obama's first ever visit to the storied seat of power.

Bush guided Obama into the room for private, one-on-one talks 71 days before the Democrat formally becomes the first black US president and inherits two wars and a global economic crisis that some compare to the Great Depression.

The outgoing leader described the talks as "good, constructive, relaxed and friendly," said spokeswoman Dana Perino.

New Maldives president sworn in

New Maldives president sworn in

A former political prisoner Mohamed Nasheed who defeated Asia's longest-serving ruler in the first multiparty election in the Maldives, took his oath today to become president of the Indian Ocean archipelago.

"No other citizens in the world in modern times have changed a 30-year-old regime so peacefully. I congratulate the Maldivian citizens," Mohamed Nasheed, 41, said shortly before signing his presidential oath to thundering applause in parliament.

A one metre rise in sea levels would almost totally submerge the country's 1,192 coral islands scattered off the southern tip of India. According to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a rise of at least 18cm is likely by the end of the century.

"I don't want Maldivians to end up as environmental refugees in some camp," Nasheed told reporters after his October 28 election win.

"We are talking about taking insurance - if the islands are sinking we must find highland some place close by. We should do that before we sink."Nasheed told Britain's Guardian newspaper that he had already broached the subject of finding a new homeland for Maldivians with several countries and found them to be "receptive".

'No end till we get Prabhakaran' - President

'No end till we get Prabhakaran' - Sri Lanka President

The Government will declare a ceasefire only if the Tigers lay down weapons and surrender, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told India Today in an interview.

Speaking to India Today Managing Editor Raj Chengappa at Temple Trees, President Rajapaksa said the Forces have Prabhakaran cornered and he will be caught soon. "The day Prabhakaran is caught, military operations would be over. Soon after that we will give a political solution as we did in the East," the President said.

Asked whether the war would be over if Kilinochchi falls, he said: "I don't call it a war. It is a military operation we have launched to wipe out terrorists. Kilinochchi is the LTTE headquarters.

We are also advancing from the East to take Mullaitivu. Progress is slow because we want zero civilian casualties." "Now, one of LTTE's child soldiers is the chief minister and another of Prabhakaran's commanders is a Member of Parliament. But Prabhakaran must be punished for his crimes.

Let's not forget he killed Rajiv Gandhi apart from so many Sri Lankan leaders. He has to undergo trial and if India is interested in having him extradited we will do that," he remarked.

The President recalled how the LTTE used ceasefires to strengthen themselves-buy weapons, firepower, recruit soldiers and make bunkers. "We know they will not honour a ceasefire now. Let them lay down their arms and surrender. We will declare a ceasefire."

He disclosed that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not mention about a ceasefire during their recent telephonic conversation.

"No, he didn't request me to declare a ceasefire. His concern was about the Tamil civilian population. India has been fair. It is focused on the humanitarian issue, especially of the Tamils in the North and the East, which we are taking care of."

"I agree that there can be no military solution. Soon after I took over, we appointed an all party committee to look into this issue. I believe that if the southern political parties, that form the majority, do not accept a political solution then we can't implement it. I don't want to thrust a solution on parties.

If I can have all the parties agree to a solution to solve the problem it would be appreciated by the people. Otherwise there will be riots and no Government will be able to implement it," the President noted.

Asked as to why the Government sent out humanitarian agencies from the war zone, he replied: "We have only prevented those NGOs that were helping the LTTE consolidate, with some even transferring weapons and money.

Plus, when fighting was going on, there was concern about their safety. But we do allow the UN and Red Cross to supply food and medicines, which in any case is distributed by the Government. We are not harassing Tamils. This war is not against Tamils or Muslims. This war is against terrorism. That has to be understood

India’s action on Sri Lanka not satisfactory, says Communist Party of India
The action taken by the Central government in response to the demand of the people of Tamil Nadu to stop the war in Sri Lanka was neither satisfactory nor promising, Communist Party of India State secretary D. Pandian said on Saturday.

Talking to journalists here, he said India could not wash its hands of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue on the pretext that it was an internal matter of another country.

“When human rights are violated, borders of a country cannot be a stumbling block. In the case of Sri Lanka we have a close relationship with the Tamils.”

Stating that people of Tamil Nadu were ready to donate food and medicine to the Sri Lankan Tamils, Mr. Pandian requested N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, to get permission from Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to distribute the same.

MP Rajapaksa, who visited India as a special envoy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said that torrential rains and flooding had affected Tamils displaced by the fighting in the North and that India had pledged to provide food and medicine for them.

He added that UN agencies would visit the war zone to assess the situation.

“Both countries are proving to be genuine friends. This is true for the people of the two countries too,” Rajapaksa told IANS, a day after meeting External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and other officials.

“India has really proved to be a real friend. They are friends of Sri Lanka,” said Rajapaksa.

“We found they (India) have understood very well our problems.” “We also realise that we need to do everything we can do for the safety of civilians (in the war zone). We are discussing (this issue with India),” said Rajapaksa. “We want to ensure zero civilian casualties or at least keep it to the very minimum.”

Providing a gist of his talks here, Rajapaksa told IANS: “There are certain hardships (to civilians). We agree. We want to minimise them. There are no civilians now in Kilinochchi.

The Sri Lankan Tamils don’t depend on Prabakaran –Jayalalithaa

Currently a few LTTE cadres are reported to be taking treatment at the hospital in Vellore. So far the government has not responded to this, said Jayalalithaa is a statement issued .

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Wednesday condemned the pro-LTTE speeches made by film directors Seeman and Amir and a few politicians and said supporting the outfit, responsible for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was an anti-national activity.

“The Sri Lankan Tamils don’t depend on LTTE chief Prabakaran. He is a destructive force. He will make use of the ceasefire only to amass weapons and other things. Who is responsible for the killing of leaders like Amirthalingam and Padmanahbha? It is none other than Prabakaran,” she said in a statement.
Alleging that blatant propaganda in support of the LTTE became rampant in Tamil Nadu whenever the DMK was in power, Ms Jayalalithaa said the propagandists had gone to the extent of articulating objectionable and anti-national slogans like “creation of separate Tamil Nadu” and “ready to take up arms for the cause.”
